Is charging overnight better for the environment?
Let’s be honest, most of us plug things in at night if it’s convenient or cheaper, not because we’re trying to save the planet. But is charging overnight actually greener, or is it just a clever way to dodge peak prices?
Why does overnight matter?
At night, the demand for electricity drops off. Most people are tucked up in bed, not washing or running the tumble dryer. But the grid still needs to keep the lights on, so there’s often a surplus of electricity – especially from wind turbines spinning away while everyone’s asleep.
Is overnight electricity really greener?
It can be. Here’s why:
- More renewables: The UK’s grid often has a higher proportion of wind power overnight, since wind farms don’t clock off when the sun goes down.
- Less fossil fuel: With fewer people using power, the dirtiest, most expensive power stations are switched off first. That means the electricity left on the grid is often cleaner.
- Less waste: If wind turbines are generating more than we need, that energy can go to waste unless someone uses it. Charging your battery or electric car overnight helps soak up that surplus.
Are there any catches?
- Not always 100% green: Sometimes, especially on a still night, there’s less wind and more gas in the mix. But on average, overnight power is cleaner than peak-time power.
- Depends on the grid: The greener the grid, the greener your overnight charge. In the UK, we’re getting cleaner every year.
Why do energy companies want you to charge overnight?
Because it helps them balance the grid. If everyone uses power at the same time, the grid has to fire up extra (and often dirtier) power stations. Spreading out demand means fewer emissions and a more stable system. That’s why they offer cheaper rates off-peak – it’s good for you and good for the planet.
The bottom line
Charging overnight isn’t just easier on your wallet, it’s usually easier on the environment too. You get cheaper, greener power, and the grid gets a helping hand. Not bad for something you do while you sleep. Faff free!
